He spoke of health as 'resonance', as in the body's ability to vibrate and hum freely without interference, and in turn, harmonize with the environment at large.

Too abstract?

Think about it. When we come across a person or an idea that excites us (or 'makes our heart sing', as a friend is fond of saying) we say we resonate with them. It's like, they are vibrating at a certain frequency, which we are receptive to, and then we vibrate at the same rate, resulting in a feeling of being 'in sync' with them.

So, to take this into the realm of bodywork, picture a tuning fork. Or a guitar string. When properly tuned, pulled to the right tautness, or free of interference, they vibrate... creating a clear tone that sends waves out into the air, and will cause other receptive objects (for example, an eardrum, or another tuning fork) to vibrate in response. But when something is preventing the free vibration of these instruments, there is flat, distorted, or even absence of tone.

Saul says there is growing research and evidence to suggest that the human body can vibrate much like a tuning fork...that every living thing has a measurable tone (even the earth, which is a very, VERY low octave G). One company, called Biosonics, and I'm sure there's more, works with healing the body using a variety of tuning forks.

In the work that I do, especially the Shin tai, we play with the idea that the clearest physical indication of resonance in the body is the free movement of the breath through the body, as illustrated by the spine. While postponing some of the depth of this topic for later posts, suffice it to say that the intention of Shin tai is to release hindrances (physical or emotional) to the free vibration of the spine ... all of its physical and energetic components. In this way, breath fills the body more fully, resulting in greater freedom of movement and fuller expansion of life expression in the receiver.

Cool, huh?

Like this post? Stumble It!

The lengthy conversation that ensued between us covered common questions concerning our respective feelings around confidence, adequacy, abundance, and fears. As I related my occasional concerns about being adequately skilled enough to work on people, particularly in the face of so many possible modalities, it came back around to a belief I actually already had, but was reminded of and expanded upon in my sharing it with her. That is, that the real potential for healing in the work that we do, the bulk of what we offer, lies not in our training or skill set, but in our connection with our clients.

The prevalent mindset among 'alternative' practitioners is that we - all of us- already have the healing capacity within. A fortunate few, through various awareness trainings or other bestowed gifts, can access this capacity at will. But for the rest of us mere mortals, it would seem that we need an external 'trigger'. I find it no small realization that the highest accomplishments of human achievement and awareness come out of a group effort.. collaboration, mutual support, community. I see this message again and again... after all, humans are 'social animals', and if you subscribe to the idea that we are all individual manifestations of Spirit, then coming together in any effort is that much closer to re-creating One-ness.

I believe, in so many situations, what we humans are really seeking is connection, especially with a listening ear and an open heart. What does the therapeutic relationship offer to a body who is hurting? A safe space away (even if briefly) from the stressors of daily life; an invitation to lay one's burdens down and relax; a centered person who can receive the client's 'story' with detached compassion, objectivity and loving-kindness. And, hey, if they get some good bodywork along with that, that's just icing on the cake!

My statement to this new friend was that I believed the real healing power to be the heart connection we make with our clients. Knowledge of technique and proficiency in one's modality is very important, but we, as practitioners, should not underestimate what natural gifts we have as human beings that we bring into the treatment room.

(Many thanks to A. P. for reminding me of this..!)

Thoughts? However, I just wanted to share my appreciation of one little "green ally" - to borrow Susun Weed's term - that is hypericum perforatum, or St. John's Wort. (Of course, if I'm going to borrow from Ms Weed in this case, then I should refer to this plant as St. Joan's Wort.)

Today, June 24th ( in many Christian religions being St. John's Day; and in more pagan traditions, Midsummer) is traditionally the first day on which St. John's Wort is harvested. What I love about this humble little plant are the interesting associations. For example, the affinity with the Sun... the brilliant shade of yellow in the blooms, the time of year in which it's ready to be picked and its contrary nature of causing photosensitvity, while at the same time being used to treat burns (better even than aloe in my experience) and damage from radiation therapy. St. John's Wort has also made its way into mainstream pharmacology through its use as an anti-depressant (which can be a poetic metaphor for bringing light into a dark state of mind).

Reflecting on the mythology of its namesake, the beheaded St John the Baptist, the color of the nectar contained with the tiny blooms is a deep, rich, blood-red. St. John's Wort oil, which is used in topical applications, is infused with the little blossoms, and therefore also bears this dramatic hue. Quite beautiful!

Monday Meditation - Let Go of Tension

Today's 'meditation'...addressing stress and tension held in the body.
